Racking & Warehousing — featured
Overview

Industry overview

Warehouse racks carry heavy stored loads on light cold-formed sections, hooked and bolted connections, and floor anchors. Over a building's life racks get changed: levels are moved, loads go up and uprights get hit by forklifts. Owners and auditors want documented proof that the racks on site can safely carry what is stored on them.

Shirsh Technosolutions assesses rack stability and load capacity and issues certification for warehouse racking across India, for new installations and for racks already in use. Our engineers visit the site, record the as-built configuration and any damage, check the structure by calculation and FEA, and issue a certificate stating the safe load. For rack and pallet manufacturers we also check beams, decking panels and pallets during design.

Clients include Croma (Infiniti Retail), Britannia, FM Logistic, Mahindra Logistics and the racking manufacturer Avion Exim. Recent certification work has covered warehouses in Hyderabad, Bhopal, Lucknow, Nagpur and Bhiwandi.

The terrain

Industry challenges

Racks modified on site, with levels moved or loads changed from the original design

Missing design data for older or imported racking

Forklift damage to uprights and bracing that reduces capacity

Connection and base-plate behaviour that governs frame stability more than member strength

Our contribution

How we help

  1. 1

Site survey anywhere in India of the as-built rack configuration, stored loads and visible damage

  2. 2

Stability and load-capacity checks of frames, beams and connections by calculation and FEA in ANSYS Mechanical

  3. 3

Rack stability certificates stating the safe load for each rack configuration

  4. 4

Load-capacity FEA of beams, decking panels and pallets for manufacturers

  5. 5

Practical advice on repairs, extra bracing or load reduction where a rack falls short

What's changing

Key trends

Taller, narrow-aisle warehouses that bring racks closer to their stability limits

Periodic rack inspection and certification asked for well after installation

Automated storage and shuttle systems adding dynamic loads to racking

Rapid growth of large logistics and e-commerce warehouses across India
