Aerospace
Explicit dynamic, composite and structural FEA for aerospace parts such as radomes, fairings and brackets, with damage margins the design team can use.

Industry overview
Aerospace structures are thin, light and often made of composite laminates, so there is very little margin to hide behind. Impact from hail or debris, vibration in service and thermal loads all have to be checked. The useful answer is usually where damage starts and how it grows, because that decides inspection intervals and repair limits.
Shirsh Technosolutions runs explicit dynamic, composite and structural FEA in ANSYS Mechanical. On a recent radome job we modelled hail as SPH particles striking a thin composite sandwich wall over repeated hits, and found the point at which the outer skin first perforates. The same methods carry over to fairings, panels, brackets and other lightweight structures.
Industry challenges
Thin composite sandwich walls with orthotropic plies and a crushable core
High-velocity impact where the projectile itself breaks up, as hail does
Repeated impacts on a zone that is already damaged
Meeting weight targets while keeping a clear damage margin
How we help
- 1
Explicit dynamic impact simulation with SPH projectiles and progressive ply failure
- 2
Composite laminate modelling with orthotropic properties and core crushing behaviour
- 3
Modal, random vibration and shock analysis of brackets and mounted equipment
- 4
CFD in ANSYS Fluent for external flow and thermal loads on enclosures and fairings
Key trends
More composite and sandwich construction in airframes and radomes
Simulation used to set inspection intervals after hail and bird-strike events
Drones and urban air mobility vehicles built with light, low-cost structures
Additively manufactured brackets that need their own material and fatigue data
