Project Brief

This case study demonstrates how Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was used to assess the structural strength of a parking structure. The analysis aimed to determine the load distribution, identify areas of maximum stress and deformation, and propose solutions to enhance structural integrity.

CHALLENGES AND OBJECTIVES

The client needed to ensure the parking structure could withstand the weight of parked cars without experiencing excessive stress or deformation. The objectives were to identify critical stress points and suggest design modifications to improve structural stability.

METHODOLOGY (SOLUTIONS IMPLEMENTED)

1.Modelling: Utilized 3D CAD Modeling to create a detailed model of the parking structure.
2.Boundary Conditions: Applied the weight of cars on the wheel patch area of the structure and fixed supports at the base.
3.Analysis: Conducted static loading analysis to determine stress and deformation under given conditions.
4.Recommendations: Proposed increasing the thickness of sheet metal in areas experiencing high stress to enhance load-bearing capacity.

BENEFITS (RESULTS ACHIEVED)

1.Identified locations of maximum stress and deformation.
2.Recommended design modifications to improve structural integrity.
3.Enhanced understanding of load distribution for future design improvements.
4.Added dead load providing stability to the structure.

SUMMARY OF PROJECT

FEA analysis provided crucial insights into the structural behavior of the parking structure, enabling the client to make informed decisions regarding design modifications. The project highlighted the importance of FEA in optimizing structural designs for enhanced safety and durability.
